Pre-emergent Crabgrass Controls: FAQ for Homeowners

What are pre-emergent herbicides?

Pre-emergent herbicides are pesticides that prevent weeds from emerging. They are normally applied in the Spring before the weed seeds germinate and take root.

What is Crabgrass?

Crabgrass is a grassy weed that grows from one stem with thick-looking blades shooting outwards. It also has a dense root system making it hard to treat when it’s fully grown. Crabgrass loves the hot weather and thrives in areas of your lawn that are exposed to a lot of sunlight.

When do you apply pre-emergent Crabgrass control?

The best time to apply pre-emergent Crabgrass control is when the soil temperature stays at 55 degrees for five consecutive days. As the soil gets warmer, the Crabgrass will then start to germinate. From there, the pre-emergents barrier will stop any further germination of the Crabgrass.

How long does it last for?

The length of time of the control has several factors that contribute to it, which include rainfall and temperatures. Typically, we see that it controls around 90% of Crabgrass and lasts up to four or five months under normal weather conditions.
