Watering: You Can Do More Harm Than Good!

You would think ” Why would a lawn care company say that?”  Being in this business for over thirty years and being aware of the importance of proper watering and conservation, I’ve seen a lot of water being wasted on poorly designed sprinkler systems or just the fact that some homeowners are just not educated enough on how to water.  By over watering this can lead to Disease Problems, More Weeds & Crabgrass Germinating, and the Leaching of Fertilizer, Insect & Weed Control Products past the root zone.  I have also seen on lawns which have been over watered, areas of drought stressed grass that didn’t receive any water because the sprinkler heads did not reach that area!  It is very important to check your sprinkler heads a few times a year to make sure they are working properly!

So How Much & When Should I Water?  Don’t Just Set It & Forget It!  Most lawns here in Nassau & Suffolk counties rarely needs water in the Early Spring since we usually have rain once or twice weekly.  The only time you would water in early spring would be after a treatment of fertilizer; pre-emergent crabgrass control or if we have an unusual dry spell. If you applied seed, then you will need to lightly wet down seeded areas daily for 1-2 weeks in order for the seed to germinate.  The best time to water is early morning, between 4:00 & 8:00 AM., but Never water at night.  Grass blades dry quickly in the morning sun, reducing the development of diseases.   The amount to water depends on soil type, temperature, wind, and a host of other factors.  As not to get too technical, the rule of thumb is most lawns need 1″ of water per week.  If we have a heat wave for a few days, you might have to apply up to 2″ for your grass to stay green.  You can measure the amount of water by putting out measuring containers in different locations and timing the amount applied. There are water measuring devices on the market you can buy or use a 1 lb. coffee can and measure 1″ from the bottom.  If you think you have problems in addition to watering, just call or email me so we can discuss them further.
